What Does Being Healthy Mean?

By Mayson Marshall, nutraMetrix Program Coordinator

Finding Ways to Promote Your Overall Health and Well-Being

When we think about being healthy, it is more common than not that we think of being physically fit or looking a certain way because society has portrayed us to believe that a skinny or fit looking body defines one as being healthy. Being healthy is far more than a physical appearance; being healthy includes our clinical, physical, social, mental and emotional condition. Healthy also looks and feels different for everyone. As a new year has begun, most of us have set resolutions or goals on things we will prioritize, commit to, or change throughout the year. One of the most common resolutions every year is an individuals’ health. However, what does being healthy mean to you and what are ways you can promote living a healthy lifestyle?

Clinical Health

Going to yearly physicals are an effective way to ensure you are in good health. Seeing your doctor regularly can not only confirm where you stand regarding your health, but can also allow for a plan or adjustments to be made to promote better health within. During your physical, the doctor checks on the following to make sure they fall within the standard range, ultimately to assure you are good in health:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Blood sugars levels
  • Weight
  • Screenings
  • Eye exams

Physical Health

To be physically healthy it is important to make sure you are exercising regularly. This includes cardiovascular exercise and strength training. It is recommended to do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week and to strength train at least twice a week.

What are the benefits of physical activity? (1)

  • Weight management
  • Promotes more energy throughout the day
  • Can improve your overall health
  • Better sleep quality
  • Reduces stress and enhances mood
  • Improves quality of life (cognitive function and everyday activity)

In addition, a balanced diet plays a key part in your overall health. The quality of food that we consume can either be a preventative or a problem for us in life. The food we consume daily helps our bodies function; in simpler terms, what we put in our body is what we will get out of it. A healthy diet plan should consist of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods that are high in protein.  Foods that are high in sugar, sodium, saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol should be limited.

What does a healthy diet provide? (2)

  • Supports the immune system
  • Supports our muscles and bones
  • Promotes healthier skin, teeth, and eyes.
  • Can increase energy throughout the day
  • Promotes better sleep patterns

Mental and Emotional Health

Mental health is the overall well-being of how we think, act, and control our feelings. Mental health can be impacted from several different sources and unfortunately it is very common for people to experience. A decline in mental health can make an individual feel unhappy, anxious, experience mood swings, social withdrawal, weight change and have sleeping problems. (3)

What are things you can do to promote a healthier mental and emotional state? (4)

  • Get restful sleep/know when to take a break
  • Cut back on social media
  • Strengthen your relationships with friends and family
  • Exercise and follow a balanced diet
  • Get some sunshine
  • Make time for yourself to do the things you like or make you feel good
  • Meditate
  • Develop coping and relaxation skills
